Our Founder - Let's Get Personal

Hello! I’m Teresa! I am proud to be the Lead Guide and Founder of Cascade Mountain Adventures. It’s nice to meet you!

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest in Portland, Oregon and have been playing in the dirt for as long as I can remember. One of my earliest childhood memories is of getting in trouble for getting dirt on my nice dresses. (oops) Many years have gone by since then and the dresses have been exchanged for gore-tex and hiking boots.

I have been an avid hiker and camper for over twenty years. These adventures started in the forests in the shadow of Mt. Hood and soon expanded into the foothills of the Washington Cascades when I relocated to Seattle, WA. I thrive outdoors and have always found a deep sense of peace, challenge, and fulfillment on the side of a mountain.

One of my first backpacking trips was a grueling ten mile roundtrip epic in the summer of 2001. It rained the entire time, we barely left our tent, were growled at by what I swear was a bear, and returned soaked, tired, and miserable. It was terrible. I couldn’t wait to do it again.

My first several years outdoors were just me, my friends, an embarrassing amount of gear, and a lot of trial and error. These first backpacking trips eventually grew to include snow camping, mountaineering, backcountry skiing, and ice climbing. I loved being out there.

Something happened along the way though. I noticed that I was often the only woman in the group. This became more and more true, and more and more frequent, the higher and further I went into the outdoors. I couldn’t understand why.

I desperately missed the company of other women and was elated when I found another woman to share adventures. It was all too rare. Something had to change.

There is a famous quote that encourages us to ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world.’ I finally stepped up to challenge of supporting other women outdoors - taking them on their first hikes - before growing into a volunteer event leader for local outdoor women’s organizations. These trips grew to include overnight backpacks, group snow camping adventures, and summit climbs of Mt. Rainier.

Encouraging other women in the outdoors quickly grew to become one of the most rewarding activities of my life. It became readily apparent that the outdoor skills were often just the tip of the iceberg. There was so much more.

For so many, these new outdoor skills and new experiences were representative of something deeper. I have been lucky enough to witness the growth and breakthroughs of so many incredible women. It is an honor to be there when they realize that yes - they can. They are worthy. They are strong. They are enough. They are brave enough to pursue their dreams.

I believe that outdoor skills mean so much more. These skills are the gateway to outdoor adventures. These outdoor adventures, for so many, are a path to confidence, empowerment, re-connection to nature, and the fulfillment of deeply held dreams.

I founded Cascade Mountain Adventures to further serve the mission of teaching outdoor skills for women, by women. I cannot imagine another mission that would be closer to my heart. The outdoors have given me so many gifts. The outdoors have been a place of continual growth, challenge, and renewal. It is now my calling to share this with others. This is my own small way of changing the world - one woman at a time.

You are invited to join us at an upcoming event. Our full 2019 Event Calendar will announced on 11/19. I’d be honored to share a trail with you.
